Habit-Forming Joy Makers

I’ll put it right out there: I have some habits not worth forming. Under no circumstances. Ever. Slouching. Procrastinating. Eating half of a whole yellow cake every time I bake one. Not answering emails right away. Not hanging up my clothes as soon as I take them off. Goodness, me. I’ve said too much. Or maybe, in the words of R.E.M., I haven’t said enough.

We all have our habits. Some habits take us further away from experiencing everyday joy and others bring us closer. But in this moment, I want to share my favorite habit. My “I-don’t-care-if-you-don’t-get-it-I’m-doing-it-anyway habit.” Nope, has nothing to do with chocolate, cake, wine, or binge-watching anime on Netflix. It has everything to do with my phone. A certain little feature on my phone called “Do Not Disturb.” Yes! Don’t get me started. I LOVE Do Not Disturb. My habit: setting it so that for the seven hours I am sleeping, the Do Not Disturb function is on. No phone calls. No texts. No notifications. And lots of sleep. Ok, it isn’t my habit. It’s more my phone’s habit. But in a world of constant information flow, having a few hours of quiet that my phone automatically sets for me everyday is great. Great for maintaining boundaries, too, a fundamental aspect of your joy-journey
